Of all the cultural buildings that make up the Paseo del Arte (Art Walk), part of the Landscape of Light declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Serrería Belga (The Belgian Sawmill) Cultural Space is the only one that belongs to the City Council. It has been an integral part of the ecosystem of cultural centres located on the Paseo del Prado-Buen Retiro ever since its inauguration as a new municipal space in 2022.

With a surface area of almost 4,000 square metres, it occupies a unique industrial building from the early 20th century. It was the first building in Madrid to use the innovative technology of reinforced concrete.

Entrusted to the Langarita-Navarro studio, the building’s refurbishment project has won awards at the 12th Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial in 2013, the COAM award in 2013, the Sacyr Innovation Award in 2014 and, more recently, the COAM+10 award in 2023, bestowed by the Official College of Architects of Madrid to a building that is more than ten years old and has the highest architectural quality, within or outside the Community of Madrid.
